Event Description:
Oyster domes are constructed onsite at the Tampa Bay Watch Marine Center throughout the year. The domes are being built in preparation for placement in Tampa Bay, to minimize shoreline erosion and provide surface area for oysters to attach. Additionally, by being placed along seawalls and shorelines, the domes restore hard bottom habitat and improve water quality.(Click here to read more about our Oyster Dome program.) How do we build Oyster Domes? First, we pour marine friendly concrete into a fiberglass mold containing a large round buoy surrounded by smaller rubber balls, creating the holes in the oyster domes. Microsilica is mixed with the concrete to balance the pH so oysters are attracted to the domes. What should volunteers wear/bring? Wear closed-toe shoes and plan on getting dirty! Water and gloves will be provided. When/Where: The project is conducted at our Marine Center (3000 Pinellas Bayway South, Tierra Verde, FL) from 9:00 am-12:00 pm. We're recruiting volunteers to help us build domes on the following dates: Monday, February 1 Wednesday, February 3 Friday, February 5 Monday, February 8 Wednesday, February 10 Friday, February 12 Wednesday, February 17 Friday, February 19 Monday, February 22 Registration is required. Please sign up with Rachel Arndt and let her know the dates you would like to volunteer and your phone number. Thank you!
